In 1776, the first courses on agricultural sciences were given at the Faculty of Philosophy of Prague Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. In 1812, a Department of Agriculture was formed at the Czech Polytechnics. In the fall of 1848, the first courses in forestry sciences were held.

The true history of our institution began in 1906, when the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I established a Faculty of Agriculture at the Czech Polytechnics in Prague by edict. Professor Julius Stoklasa, a well-known soil chemistry expert, was appointed as the Faculty's first Dean. The Faculty established its own lively activity from the start (1906/1907), based in large part on the selflessness of its instructors and students.

WW1 momentarily interrupted the growth of the Faculty, but with the creation of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918, the Faculty continued to flourish in a highly dynamic pace. Education reforms in the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic resulted in institutional modifications to the Czech Polytechnics (renamed Czech Technical University in Prague in 1920). In 1920, the Faculty of Agriculture was renamed the College of Agriculture and Forest Engineering. It was still affiliated with the Czech Technical University. The College of Agriculture and Forest Engineering was formerly housed at Prague 2's Gröbe Villa near Havlkovy sady.  It relocated to a new facility near the Czech Technical University in the Prague 6 - Dejvice neighborhood in 1936.

The university now has around 18 000 students (10% of them are international students), 6 faculties, and 1 institute. CZU provides nearly 170 recognized study programs at the BSc, MSc, and PhD levels (the language of instruction in 9 BSc, 20 MSc, and 18 PhD programs is English).

The institution employs 1 700 people, with over 700 of them being Professors or Associate Professors. The Czech University of Life Sciences has been a member of the Euroleague for Life Sciences since 2007.
