Working in the United Kingdom under a student visa

Your particular permits governing whether and how you may work in the UK during or after your education will depend on your visa.

Working during your studies

Students on full time degree-level courses holding a Student visa are permitted to work in the UK. The requirements and rules are as follows:

  • Throughout the academic year at a university, up to 20 hours a week. According to UKVI, a "week" is "a period of seven days beginning on a Monday and ending on a Sunday."
  • Full-time in vacation periods
  • Any work placement must not last longer than 50% of the overall course length (unless there is a UK statutory requirement for the course to contain a specific period of work placement that exceeds this limit), and it may only be taken full-time during term time if it is an integral and assessed part of the course.
  • As a student union sabbatical officer for up to two years
  • You will not be permitted to work, whether paid or unpaid, in the UK if you have a student visa for a part-time programme.

Student visa students can only work on a temporary basis - they cannot be employed on a permanent contract. They cannot be self-employed or set up a business, or employed as a professional sportsperson or as an entertainer.

If you have a different sort of visa, you should ask the international student advice team if you may work while you are a student. In its visa guidelines, the Home Office gives some instances of what would be deemed "engaging in business" (thus you would not be permitted to do this).

This includes:

  • launching a business as a lone proprietor or in a partnership that is engaged in trading or establishing a trading presence
  • being a worker for a business in which you own 10% or more of the stock (even if the shares are held in trust for you), or
  • working for a firm where you are a director and have another formal position.

If you are physically present in the UK while working for a firm or customer outside the UK, the job counts toward your 20-hour maximum.

It also means that if you are doing any freelance work for someone outside the UK (e.g. editing journal articles) this would count as self-employment so is not allowed.

Further details regarding working while you study are provided by UKCISA. They have also created a really helpful blog that looks at various sorts of employment that would not be authorized and addresses some of the major problems with working while you study.

Living costs

Without dependents, international students studying in the UK should anticipate paying between £1300 and £1400 per month for housing, bills, food, and other living expenses in London or between £900 and £1300 in the rest of the UK.
